Interview with Fu Lei

December 30, 2014

In November 2014 Art Plural Gallery welcomed Chinese artist Fu Lei to Singapore to unveil his solo exhibition Dreams of Desire. The exhibition featured five monumental oil paintings as well as smaller scale drawings and prints.

Born in Beijing, China in 1958, Fu Lei graduated from Fine Arts School at the Hebei Normal University in 1982 and is currently based in Beijing's iconic 798 Art District. The artist's early works assimilated vivid colours and decorative delights from Chinese folk art and in 1998, the artist began to use his now signature plump figures to unearth the indolence and ambiguousness of human nature. Today, Fu Lei's elaborate oil paintings capture the notion of excess in our present world. In his works, plump figures decorated in pearls and dainty high-heels frolic amongst toads, flamingos, snails and fruit in an absurd yet uncannily familiar world.
